How can you feel heard, understood, and know that your manager has your best interests at heart? A telling sign is how the one-on-one meeting between manager and direct report takes place.
Have you been the manager, sitting in your one-on-one, with your direct report, not sure how to nurture your team member? Are you sitting in your 1:1 with your manager not sure they really ‘get’ you?
Does your manager let you talk first? Or they talk first? Just this alone, shows how your manager is either there for you or not. If they talk first, this is a telling sign they may not open to listening to you and your needs; a telling sign they are not fully engaged in your growth at work.
A one-on-one between you and your manager, is for YOU - to talk through YOUR agenda, and how the manager can HELP you. A Manager’s responsibility is to be fully present and in listening mode. Then in feedback mode.
Next time you sit with your manager, try speaking - frrom the heart, with a fully prepared agenda.
Next you sit with your direct report, try listening before speaking.
See the relationship blossom as it should, where you both are helping each other.
